From the perspective of the casual tennis fan, the Challenger series is the shadow circuit, where players generally ranked outside the top 50 scuffle for ranking position. But for many, its a stepping-stone to much bigger endeavors. Its a tough circuit, and everyone has to go through it, Frances Tiafoe said Tuesday from the Fairfield, California event. Its not as much about the money as it is the rankings points.Less than two years ago, Tiafoe was ranked No. 1,145 among ATP World Tour players, but by the end of 2015, he had zoomed up to No. 176.Now, at the age of 18, for the first time, he is a top-100 player -- No. 100 on the nose -- and part of the surging youth movement (#NextGeneration) that has come to define the ATPs 2016 season.Tiafoe is one of four teenagers ranked in the top 100.There are so many young guys coming up; its unbelievable, Tiafoe said. Youve got [Alexander] Zverev and [Nick] Kyrgios playing great tennis, and you feed on that. Its funny. Youre in juniors and looking up to the pros, and it happens so fast. Honestly, I thought it would be tougher to get up here.Ah, those impressionable teenagers. They dont always know what they dont know. Fact is, the next 50 spots will be far more difficult to scale. After that? Skill, mentality and luck will all help him become the top-10 player he envisions.Tiafoes swift ascendance, along with No. 71-ranked Californian Taylor Fritz, gives the United States two 18-year-olds in the top 100. The last time that happened? In 1990, Michael Chang and Pete Sampras were ranked among the top 100, at Nos. 10 and 14, respectively. Now, no one is predicting that Tiafoe and Fritz are going to combine for 15 Grand Slam singles titles, but that 26-year gap gets your attention.Fritz is the No. 5-ranked American man, behind Steve Johnson, Jack Sock, John Isner and Sam Querrey. Tiafoe is No. 7, behind Donald Young. Jared Donaldson, 20, is No. 10 behind Ryan Harrison.Back in February, Fritz reached the finals at Memphis and the quarterfinals in Acapulco. As a result, his last Challenger -- the Triple-A level of mens tennis -- came in April. This week, Tiafoe was playing in his 17th Challenger. The season began at Happy Valley, Australia, where the sturdily built Tiafoe lost in the first round (Fritz was the eventual winner there), then lost in the second round of qualifying at the Australian Open.Last week, Tiafoe took the title in Stockton, California, winning $14,400 but also collecting the championship share of 100 points. That vaulted him 17 spots, into the No. 100 slot.In the final, Tiafoe defeated Long Islander Noah Rubin, the 2014 Wimbledon junior champion. It was a potentially awkward match because they were booth being coached by former U. Wholesale Air Max Cheap. S. professional?Robby Ginepri, a three-time winner on the ATP Tour and semifinalist in the 2005 US Open. Ginepri, according to Tiafoe, recently signed a 20-week coaching deal with the USTA.It was weird and pretty funny, actually, Tiafoe said. We both had a great week. Robby just told us to go out there and enjoy the battle. I was happy I played really well.Tiafoe, who also won the Challenger in Granby, Canada, was the first teenager to win multiple titles since Fritz did it last year, at Sacramento and Fairfield. Tiafoe was also a finalist in Lexington, Kentucky, Winnetka, Illinois and Tallahassee, Florida. Each of those results netted him 48 points, helping to move him up the ladder. His first-round match in Fairfield, against Blaz Rola, a 26-year-old from Slovakia, offered a glimpse of his improving game. A week earlier, in the first round at Stockton, Rola extended Tiafoe to three sets. On Tuesday, Tiafoe was down 3-1 in the second set and won the last six games to complete a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory.I definitely served better than I did last week, Tiafoe said. Hes strong from the baseline, but I stayed tough. I knew I didnt need to be too aggressive, just solid. I was lucky to break back and win the second set.In Wednesdays second round, Tiafoe fell to French teenager Quentin Halys, another #NextGeneration player ranked among the top 200. Halys, ranked No. 170, beat Tiafoe in three sets for the third time this year. That illustrates the microscopic difference between players at this level. In March, Tiafoe beat Fritz in three sets at Indian Wells, but lost to him in the first round at Winston-Salem. Tiafoes summer featured a tight loss to No. 55 Adrian Mannarino in Washington, D.C., and a first-round defeat by Isner -- in a five-set match decided by a tiebreaker.Ive played close matches with top-50 guys, Tiafoe said. Really believing you can do it is a big thing. The new ranking is a goal Ive wanted to crack since I turned pro, according to Tiafoe, and it gets him very close to automatic entry into the main draw of the Australian Open. If he can gain a few more spots, he would guarantee it. To that end, he will likely play a Challenger event in Las Vegas the following week.Thats the goal, to be in the main draw of the majors, Tiafoe said. Thats huge, moneywise and playing at that level. Hopefully, I can do well and end the year around No. 80.That would set me up, cruising along nicely. I feel like if I can get comfortable, I can get better winning a bunch of matches at the next level. ' ' '
Editors note: The 2016-17 college basketball season will be the Year of the Freshmen,?featuring what could be the best class weve ever seen. Wholesale Baseball Jerseys China . Not just listed among the all-time greats, but above them.My mindset is different from a lot of people, Fultz said. You ask people their goal and theyll say to make it to the NBA. My goal isnt just to make it there, its to be the best that ever played. Its not an outrageous vision to the 6-foot-4 native of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He knows how far he has come in only three short years when, as a 10th-grader at perennial prep powerhouse DeMatha High School, he did not make the varsity roster. Now hes being projected as potentially a top-three pick in the 2017 NBA draft if he decides to bolt college after one season. His fast rise isnt the absurd piece in all of this. Fultz says its crazy the way people react to him now. It seems with every new interview theres a new way to critique a guy who has yet to play a college game.People go from why dont I smile, to the JV story, to just the way I play is awkward, Fultz said. Its been kind of weird, but Im used to it now.Ah, the JV story. Like Michael Jordan, Fultz didnt make varsity as a sophomore and ended up playing on the junior varsity team. He already has grown tired of having that story regurgitated time and again, but finally accepted that its going to be the story for the rest of my life.Washington coach Lorenzo Romar, for one, loves that story. Without it, this could have been an entirely different story for the Huskies. Had Fultz made varsity as a sophomore, theres a good chance a school closer to home would have noticed him first and Romar never would have been able to pry him from the East Coast.Instead, associate head coach Raphael Chillious arrived early to scout a varsity game when he noticed Fultz playing junior varsity. He played nearly every position on the floor and always seemed to make the play that was needed at the time.I called Lorenzo and told him, Coach, youre going to call me crazy, but this kid is 5-foot-9. If he grows hes going to be a NBA All-Star -- not a NBA player, an All-Star, Chillious said.Fultz did grow between his sophomore and junior years, prompting Romar to have the same giddy reaction the first time he saw Fultz play in person. Romar called Chillious and asked if they were being Punkd. Washington was the only major Division I school watching Fultz play, but it was clear to the Huskies that he was going to be a special talent.Fultz played everything from point guard to power forward, which is why many schools who ended up recruiting him late in the process viewed him as a wing.I thought, I dont care who has not offered him or what anybody says -- call him a 2 or a 3 -- that kid is an NBA point guard, Romar said. The way he moved, the feel he had. And, that game, I dont think he was playing hard. You could just see it.Everyone sees it now. What they didnt see is how all the small details worked together to get him to this point.Ebony Fultz, his mother, said she didnt have a grandiose plan of grooming her son into an NBA player when she first sought out a basketball trainer when he was around 7. She started taking to Keith Williams, a former high school classmate who taught basketball fundamentals to kids as young as 5.Her plan was simply to get Markelle involved in something he enjoyed to occupy his time. She wanted him active. The only thing she knew for sure is that she didnt want him to play football. She viewed it as too dangerous, although there was that one season she relented and Fultz played on the offensive line for the team at the Marlboro Boys & Girls Club. He dreamed of being a running back, but the coachs son got all the carries. She also enrolled him in karate classes, where he worked his way up to a green belt. He learned a lot of things he hopes to never use, stuff like if somebody tried to stab me, I could get a knife out of their hands. What stayed with him from karate was the self-discipline he learned, which ironically led him to stop the pursuit of a black belt. He wanted his focus, and all of his free time, to go toward basketball, so he left karate behind as he went to high school.Fultz always showed Williams he had a will to work hard. When he broke his right wrist playing on Williams 15-and-under AAU team, Fultz showed up the next day at the gym shooting and dribbling with his left hand. Williams helped Fultz cultivate his competitiveness. We definitely paid attention to rankings, and yeah we did kind of target guys, Williams said. We were playing in one tournament and a guy called me from Charlotte and was like, Hey, you want to play against the Atlanta Celtics? And I was like, Yeah. They got Kobi Simmons [who this season is a freshman at Arizona] on that team, they got another kid thats ranked really high. ... And so, yeah, we did target those kids. Now Seattle is a target for NBA scouts. Fultz has made the must-see list, as many teams have already been through to see him practice. What theyve learned is that Fultz is still holding on to that 10th-grade version of himself. He still views himself as an unknown entity just trying to make a name. That approach has endeared him to his Huskies teammates.Sophomore guard David Crisp was one of Fultzs hosts when he came on his official visit. As Fultz catapulted in the rankings before arriving on campus, Crisp expected a different person to arrive as well. When he came I knew they were saying this kid is going to be one-and-done, and when it got closer to him getting here I saw stuff [about Fultz] moving up, like he might be top five or the No. 1 pick, Crisp said. I was like, man he might be kinda cocky. Hes like really the opposite.Romar has held Fultz out from several early practices to rest him. When Fultz is on the sideline, its not unusual to see him filling water cups during breaks as if he were a team manager. He doesnt have that part of him that says, Im Markelle Fultz, who are you? Chillious said. That doesnt exist.Thats why Fultz has no desire to talk about the NBA right now. Hes just trying to lead the Huskies back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011. Hes afraid that if he stops to think about the future, hell get passed by in the process by someone who was like him in the 10th grade.I want to make sure that Im not the one that lets up, because I know that some people let up that I passed now, I outworked them, Fultz said. I want to make sure that Im always working. Im trying to get in front of everybody so far ahead that theres no way they can catch me. Cheap Nike Baseball Jerseys Authentic . CALGARY, Alberta -- Jamie Benn snapped out of an early season slump in a big way Thursday night. The Dallas Stars captain ended a nine-game scoring drought with two goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-2 victory over the struggling Calgary Flames. It seems like I go through a streak like that every year. It just so happened to come pretty early this year, said Benn, who only had two goals in his first 13 games after a career-best 41 last season. When an offensive-zone penalty by Alex Chiasson put the Stars on the power play early in the third with the score tied, it took less than a minute for Dallas to convert with Benn firing a feed from Tyler Seguin past Brian Elliott to make it 3-2.He was really buzzing out there tonight, Seguin said. Thats what we needed. We needed a leader, especially our captain, to lead the way after the embarrassing loss we had the other night. The Stars were routed 8-2 on Tuesday in Winnipeg, to extend their winless skid to five games. We all knew that eventually he would come out of it. But I thought tonight, obviously, it was the best game hes played in a while, Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said. He came out physical. He started with that. I thought he was skating and going through people.Special teams was the story with Dallas converting on its lone third-period power play and Calgary failing to score on its one chance, which came with just over 4 minutes remaining. The Stars finished 1 for 3 with the extra man while Calgary was 0 for 2. Make two, its probably going to end up in your net. You make three and its going to end up in your net.Captain Mark Giordano says its on the players to improve their performance.Weve talked about it. The Stars five-game trip continues Friday in Edmonton.Johnny Gaudreau scored both goals for Calgary (5-9-1). The Flames have lost five of six overall. Were finding ways to lose, Gulutzan said. We need somebody now to step up and find a way to win and stop playing the victim. With the Flames trailing 2-0, Gaudreau came out flying to start the second, breaking a six-game scoring drought with his third and fourth goals on his first two shifts to pull Calgary even.It was nice to find the net finally, said Gaudreau, who scored 30 goals in his sophomore season. Me, (Monahan) and (Chiasson) played a good 60 minutes tonight. We were in their zone most of the night.Calgary opened the game taking the play to the Stars and running up an 8-1 lead on the shot clock. But they could not beat Lehtonen and at 12:31, Korpiskoski snapped a shot into the top corner.Benn made it 2-0 3 minutes later when the entire slot opened up before him and he took the puck to the net, zipping a backhand past Elliott. It was a better night for Kari Lehtonen after giving up four goals on 11 shots against the Jets. He finished with 29 saves to improve to 2-4-2.Elliott, who had 18 saves, fell to 3-7-0.Game notes Calgary is 0 for 26 with the extra man at home. ... SYDNEY -- Jordan Spieth may as well just switch allegiances and become an Australian, such is the warm welcome he will receive in Sydney over the next few days. Cheap Air Max Discount .In town to contest the Australian Open for the third straight year, Spieth is the only major international drawcard at the Royal Sydney Golf Club. But given the way the 23-year-old conducts himself, its unlikely the local support will lament the absence of anyone else.He may even steal some of the local support away from Australian favourites Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, John Senden and recent PGA Tour winner Rod Pampling.Well we love our time here, Spieth said when he fronted the media on Tuesday. We have a great week - its just absolutely a beautiful place coming over to Sydney and a change of pace now coming to a different golf course; but thats a whole new fun challenge for us.Were really happy to be back over in Oz - it just absolutely shows that I meant what I said about how much we like coming here and to continue to do so. Were looking forward to a great week.Already a winner of the Stonehaven Cup, Spieths victory at the 2014 Australian Open helped propel him into one golfs finest seasons in 2015 - a five-victory run that included the Masters and US Open titles and eventually saw him rise to world No.1.Yeah it was one of the best rounds Ive ever played, Spieth said of his closing-round 63 in 2014.It was very windy. I remember playing No.1 and hitting two pretty good shots and having a long two-putt for par.I heard a roar from I think Adam (Scott) making birdie on the hole in front and I just remember that not bothering me as much as it bothered me when I was in contention (previously) and the contenders were making birdies; [I wasnt] feeling that extra pressure. I just didnt feel it that day.I just said let this course come to you - you dont have to make a bunch of birdies on a day like today, and I certainly ended up making a bunch of them because I was just laid back and hit the right shots in the right places and then made a few putts. While many Australian golf fans will have fond memories of that round, Spieth showed true class on Tuesday in noting the deeper meaning that 63 carried in Australian sport at the time following the tragic death of cricketer Phil Hughes. The Australia batsman had been on 63 when he was struck in the head by a bouncer while batting for South Australia against NSW at the SCG.It was a really great feeling - I remember having the trophy and on the stage after the round; what an incredible trophy it is, I see it every day when I walk into my house. It was a tremendous honour. And 63, being even more significant given, can you remind me of his name, the cricketer who was on 63, Phil Hughes, I know that was kind of ironic that day because I think it was the week after he [died]; so there was some significance there, too.Outside of Spieth, Venezuelan Jhonnatan Vegas is the only other non-Australian PGA Tour member in Sydney this week.So why then does Spieth break ranks with so many of his countrymen in travelling Down Under, especially this year given he is no longer the defending champion?I just think its really cool to be in an opportunity, 23 years old, and to travel around the world playing golf and people want you to come and play golf around the world so they can see it, Spieth said of his willingness to travel outside the States.Thats a unique position to be in and I enjoy that those opportunities are there because our time off the golf course is totally different from what you see at home. And why not, if you have the opportunity when youre young, to go travel around the world and experience these cultures and that kind of shapes you as a person, too, recognising in your little bubble at home thats not the way the world is and you can kind of see the things in perspective a little bit. WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards used a physical brand of basketball for an impressive win in their last outing. Air Max 1 Clearance . That approach is required for the middle contest of their three-game homestand with Andre Drummond and the Detroit Pistons on deck. The Wizards (10-14) defeated the Charlotte Hornets Wednesday night 109-106 in large part to all-around performances from guards John Wall and Bradley Beal. Yet the postgame focus from both locker rooms centered on Washingtons aggressive work on both ends of the court after Hornets took a 10-point lead early in the third quarter. It was our defensive pressure, Beal said after Washington won for the third time in four games. We got tired of giving them open 3s in the first half, comfortable shots...In the second half, we just got after it.Washington got after it on the boards and interior scoring, finishing with a 56-28 points in the paint advantage.Center Marcin Gortats presence was felt in those areas, as well as helping free Wall and Beal for open looks. Wall had 25 points, 10 assists and seven steals. Beal scored 18 of 20 points in the second half and finished with a career-high nine assists. He did a great job screening, Wall said of Gortat. He really didnt focus on getting the ball as much, he just did a great job screening and rebounding the ball for us. At the end he set good screens and got an opportunity to get the ball and finish at the rim.The Wizards will see plenty of Drummond if they attack the rim Friday night in their first meeting against the Pistons (14-13).Drummond, second in the NBA with 13.7 rebounds per game, grabbed 17 in Detroits 95-85 victory in Dallas on Wednesday night. The Pistons outrebounded the Mavericks 50-30. They also rallied from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter as the Reggie Jackson-led offense eventually helped Drummond and those defending. Our defense kept us around and then we finally had a good offensive quarter in the fourth, coach Stan Van Gundy said. We hung around long enough to give ourselves a chance to have one good quarter.Reggie Jackson scored nine of his season-high 20 points in the fourth quarter. The guard played six games this season since returning from a knee injury.I just got my legs under me, Jackson said. The encouragement of the coaches and my team just telling me to keep attacking, go downhill and keep making plays. The matchup reunites twin brothers Marcus and Markieff Morris. However, Washington played Wednesday without Markieff Morris, who sat with a sore foot. Kelly Oubre Jr. made his first start of the season and scored 15 points.Marcus Morris is third in scoring behind Tobias Harris (team-high 16.3 points) and Drummond (14.5) with 14.4. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos linebacker DeMarcus Ware returned to practice on a limited basis Tuesday with the plan to have him ready for the season opener against Carolina.Ware missed training camp with a back issue that kept him out of five games in 2015, but he said he feels much better than he did during Denvers 24-10 win over Carolina in the Super Bowl last February.I was probably playing at 70 percent in the Super Bowl, still trying to be a little bit effective. Now I feel like Im 94 percent, he said, referring to his jersey number. I feel great. He took part in the walkthrough and drills at the beginning of Tuesdays practice before going in to work with strength and conditioning coach Luke Richesson. Ware came back and watched the rest of practice from the sidelines. He did all the individual, all the walkthrough and then he went with Luke for about 20 minutes and worked even harder, coach Gary Kubiak said. DeMarcus is doing good, hes right on schedule to get to Carolina, which is where were trying to go. Youll see him do a little more each day.Ware is entering his 12th NFL season and third with Denver after starting his career with Dallas. He didnt miss a game in his first eight years with the Cowboys, and his 20 sacks in 2008 led the NFL. He has 134 1/2 career sacks, 17 1/2 with the Broncos.Ware didnt take part in any of Denvers offseason workouts because of his back injury.Ware said he isnt concerned about playing in the last two preseason games and that the goal is to have him at full strength for the Broncos first game on Sept. 8. He acknowledged that while he feels great, he needs to get up to game speed. You have to get out there and do it, he said. But youre not going to see him play 60 plays. Also Tuesday, quarterback Trevor Siemian didnt throw because of a sore right shoulder. Kubiak said Siemian is day to day but is still the starter for Saturdays preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams.Siemian hurt his shoulder trying to tackle San Franciscos Ed Reid on an interception in Saturdays 31-24 preseason loss to the 49ers.I expect him to be there but its going to be a day-to-day process, said Kubiak, who classified Siemians injury as a bruise. Hes not used to tackling.Siemian took part in some drills early and then handed the ball off in a scrimmage but stood by while Mark Sanchez and Paxton Lynch ran passing plays.Lynch got a bulk of the reps, working with the first team and also running the scout team. He was picked off by cornerback Chris Harris Jr. and safety Darian Stewart on passes to the flat. The kids out here running the Rams offense, the Broncos offense. The group stage of ESL One Cologne has drawn to a close, with the field pared down by half. The remaining eight teams move on to the single elimination bracket stage to be played in the Lanxess Arena for a sold out crowd of nearly 20,000 fans. Already legends, these teams compete now to join the ranks of the elite, with the ceremony for the coronation continuing in the quarterfinals. Not one, not two, but three teams hailing from the Commonwealth of Independent States still stand at Cologne. The top dog of them all, NaVi, brushed past Group B with a solid team performance, showing an improvement in cohesion and stability that underlines the teams focus. NaVis playoff matchup is against the last North American team still competing, Team Liquid. The final hope of a region of underdogs, Liquids feel-good story may be entering its end as it faces a team far more dangerous than its group stage foes.Liquids defeat of mouz was an important win for the team and the organization, but itll need more to make a repeat semifinal appearance. The one thing it has in its favor is that it no longer has anything to lose. Now, it plays for pride. Cologne will the be the swan song of this iteration?of Liquid. Can the team give a performance that calls for an encore? The other CIS team from Group B also found its way to the brackets, albeit in less convincing fashion. Flipsid3?Tactics upset the perennial playoff team Ninjas in Pyjamas in the best-of-three decider match 2-1, which included a 16-2 embarrassment on Cache. Unfortunately for Flipsid3, it drew the short straw and has the dubious honor of playing against SK in the quarterfinals.Despite the multiple controversies that have surrounded SK for the past few months, the team appears to be playing as well as ever. Its methodical march to the finals seems a near inevitability. Having already gotten revenge for the Esports Championship Series by defeating G2, SKs only obstacle to the finals is itself. It would take a dramatic meltdown for it to fall to Flipsid3, and that simply isnt in Gabriel FalleN Toledos plan. The finaal member of the CIS trio, Gambit Gaming, is also the weakest of the three. Nike Vapormax Sale Canada. The team is the benefactor of unfortunate circumstances that left its opponents playing with stand-ins for the event. Still, Gambit took advantage of the opportunity and seized the top spot in the group, a promising sign for the teams chances to advance deeper into the tournament. Guaranteed to play a second seed, Gambit had the chance of being matched with another team of a similar level. Gambits luck has run out, however, as the survivor of the notorious Group of Death awaits.Unlike Counter Logic Gaming or Astralis, Fnatic is at full strength in Cologne, and its easily the best team to come into the playoffs as the second seed. The team has looked far from flawless, dropping a map to FaZe and only just edging out G2 in the losers match. Fnatic is certainly the favorite against Gambit, but the team needs to fix its mistakes quickly if it has any finals aspirations.Virtus.Pro may not be a CIS team in reality, but it might be a close cousin. The team of Polish veterans had a shaky year, most notably getting relegated out of the ESL Pro League. Still, the team is known for showing up at the majors, and certainly has the ability to go on a deep run in any tournament with its signature Virtus Plow style. The next match against Astralis could be the tipping point, as either team begins to gain momentum or falter and bow out.Similarly, Astralis hasnt had the best results in 2016 either. For a team that looked so consistent throughout the previous year, Astralis is now searching for answers to the question of how the team can be capable of pulling off a championship run. The prognosis is more bleak at Cologne, as medical problems have further hampered the roster, forcing the teams coach to compete instead. To defeat Virtus Pro would be a testament to the teams competitive spirit, but no one would be surprised if Astralis simply made its exit. ' ' '
OXFORD, Miss. Air Jordan 10 Wholesale . -- Auburn is one of the hottest teams in the Southeastern Conference while Mississippis season is teetering on the edge of complete disaster.Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is certainly pleased about the way the 15th-ranked Tigers (5-2, 3-1 SEC) have played during their current four-game winning streak, but hes also guarding against overconfidence as his team prepares for a road game against the Rebels (3-4, 1-3) on Saturday. You are talking about an Ole Miss team thats really talented, Malzahn said. I told our guys, `Dont let that record deceive you. Theyre one of the top groups in our league. In this league it doesnt matter who it is, anybody can beat anybody.Part of the reason for Malzahns respect for Ole Miss is his respect for their coach. Malzahn and Hugh Freeze have been friends since their days as high school coaches when theyd cross paths at coaching clinics. Now theyre both established in the SEC and have a reputation for innovative spread offenses that can pile up points in a hurry. That doesnt mean theyre completely the same: While Auburns spread has a heavy rushing component, Ole Miss is better at moving the football through the air.Freeze said it will be a huge challenge to stop Auburns running game that racked up 543 yards in an impressive 56-3 victory over Arkansas last weekend.I think they are really talented to begin with and they have a good system that really makes you defend the entire field, Freeze said. They have quality in their backs and their offensive line and theyve committed to it.Ole Miss is trying to snap a two-game skid that includes lopsided losses to Arkansas and LSU.-----Some other things to watch when Auburn travels to Ole Miss on Saturday:STOPPING THE RUN: Freeze has good reason to be worried about Auburns potent running game because Ole Miss is the worst in the SEC at stopping the run, giving up about 226 yards per game. Much of the blame has fallen on the linebackers, who the defensive coaches have constantly shuffled as theyve tried to find a group that is effective.KERRYONS BACK: Auburn tailback Kerryon Johnson returns from an ankle injury that sidelined him against Arkansas and most of the Mississippi State game, when he was hurt early. He will play this Saturday, Malzahn said. Theres no doubt about that. Without him, 240-pounder Kamryn Pettway has carried 66 times for 361 yards and five touchdowns in the past two games.SECOND HALF BLUES: Ole Miss has a 3-4 record this season despite never trailing at halftime. The Rebels have been outscored 139-87 after halftime. The biggest problem is in the third quarter -- opponents have a 78-34 advantage.STOPPING KELLY: With the help of a much improved pass rush, Auburn ranks third in the SEC in pass defense and has given up just six touchdowns through the air. Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly presents a huge challenge as the leagues top passer in yards per game. Its definitely a different challenge knowing that theyll take shots no matter how good the coverage is, Auburn cornerback Carlton Davis said. But I see it as an opportunity for me to make something out of it. Thats really a good thing for me when quarterbacks have a lot of confidence in their receivers. It just allows me to make plays and play my brand of football.RECENT HISTORY: This is the first Ole Miss-Auburn game in Oxford since 2014, when the Tigers won 35-31. The game was especially hard for Ole Miss, which lost star receiver Laquon Treadwell late in the game to a gruesome broken ankle as he was trying to score the go-ahead touchdown late in the game.-----Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP .---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org . Gary Christian looks back at last week’s Northern Trust Open, picks out his West Coast swing highlights and predicts a big few weeks ahead for Rory McIlroy. Under Armour Outlet Store . It has been a spectacular West Coast swing, certainly living up to the billing with some great comeback stories and impressive rounds on some outstanding courses.Riviera is one of the top five courses on the PGA Tour and is one where you really need to have played it a handful of times to really get a good handle on it. Its just a very, very good golf course and you cant really spray it all over the place. Bubba Watson moved back to world No 4 with victory Bubba Watson had one of those weeks at the Northern Trust Open where his driving was straight, so that 320-yard average is a very dangerous weapon when youre hitting it like that. Its a pretty long course for a normal length hitter with a lot of 460-yard holes and a lot of difficult shots indeed, so to be going in with a nine-iron when the rest of the field is going in with the six gives you a big advantage. With as much golf as he has played at the quality he has performed, Jordan Spieth was always going to have tournament where he was just off. From his driver to his putter, everything just wasnt right and around a course with the quality of Riviera, theres always the potential of shooting something unexpected. McIlroy finished nine strokes adrift of Bubba Watson at Riviera We can say the same for Rory McIlroy in the final round, particularly with the putting which is obviously quite a concern. If theres a weakness in his game then its the consistency in his putting and its a little frustrating for him to get in a position and not close out the deal.As one of the worlds top three players you would have expected him to, but I think a lot it was just down to rustiness. Hes now starting to get ready for Augusta and starting to have a more regular playing schedule, so Im sure well see him do a lot better the next time hes in that position and probably win the tournament. When you start back in a different continent on a different tour it takes a little while to get everything fine-tuned for that last round, so I think thats all part of Rorys poor finish and I think hes going to be just fine. Hes familiar with all of those courses hes playing (on the Florida Swing) and I expect to see something special from McIlroy. Gary Christian Special performanceI sure weve already seen the round of the year in Brandt Snedeker at the Farmers Insurance Open. I cant see anything approaching that. For him to score that low in those conditions on that course was incredible. It was basically an unplayable golf course. When the best players in the world were in action and the average score was almost 80, it just goes to show there was something a little bit special about that 69.On possibly the hardest course on the PGA Tour where the rough was a thick as it was and the green as quick as they were, just keeping it anywhere near 76 or 77 would have been an achievement. Brandt Snedeker was the only player to shoot under par during the final round We know how brutally hard it can be playing links courses in Britain with the wind coming up, so I think Greg Owen described conditions in California quite nicely before the final round as having the potential for carnage.Snedekers achievements were amazing, but it was impressive to watch KJ Choi and Jimmy Walker try to chase him down. It was good to see they still had difficult conditions on the Monday and at least had a chance down the last few holes.Fowlers frustrationYou can frame the Phoenix Open as a tournament Rickie Fowler threw away, but you can also frame it as one where he holed countless putts to stay in contention. It just happens that Hideki Matsuyama was equal to him and hit more good shots, as Rickie hit one poor one to miss out. Fowler is a four-time winner over the past 12 months Fowler was clearly crushed in the press conference afterwards, as hes now in that position in golf where if he gets into a play-off then he expects to win. He expects to be a better player than the guy hes going to be playing against, but it wasnt a shock that Matsuyama was able to hold him off.Weve got to realise that Matsuyama is one of those players that has the total game, so we shouldnt be surprised to see him bouncing around the worlds top five or six in two or three years time.He may have kept hitting the shots he wanted to and almost always pulled them off, but Fowler will certainly be kicking himself for finding the lake at 17. Saying that, hell also look back at the quality of drives at the 18th and feel his game is going from strength to strength. Butch Harmon takes Tim Barter through the changes hes made to Rickie Fowlers game, which Harmon believes will make him a great. It seems like his focus, driving and long game all get better when the pressure is on. Rickie used to have the tendency to spray a little bit with his driver under pressure, but thats now gone. His driving is now an incredible weapon.Maybe his next thing to work on is how he can hold and extend a lead, much like he did in Abu Dhabi. We saw his ability to chase down leads last year and come from behind, but we need to see him control things from the start a few more times. Some people make it look easy like Spieth and McIlroy, but there are very few who can do that on a consistent basis.Blast from the pastFor me, the West Coast Swing highlight was Vaughn Taylors victory at Pebble Beach. The feel-good factor of the whole story was just tremendous. Vaughn Taylor secured his first victory since 2005 Taylor had such a solid career, playing in the Ryder Cup and being a multiple PGA Tour winner, but saw his career go off the rails and was barely getting in to Web.com Tour events. Thats the great thing though when youre a PGA Tour player; even if you havent made a cut for years youre still good enough for it to be your week.He pulled it all together brilliantly and more than anything handled the emotions and the chance to win a tournament. As someone who would certainly be considered a journeyman, the feeling of watching a player like him take on the big boys and prevail was very much a heart-warming story.Exciting times aheadMcIlroy now has a busy schedule, but hes full of energy and more importantly needs to get a win under his belt. Regaining the that he has the ability to close out a win is important to him, so obviously the more tournaments hes in the better the chance of him doing that. McIlroy is looking for his first win of 2016 At least there isnt a huge amount of travel with it all being based in Florida, so there are no worries about jet-lag and he can just turn up on the Tuesday night and play in the following days Pro-Am. Hes familiar with all of the courses he will be playing and I expect to see something special from McIlroy.I think people, especially in the second half of last year, were talking about Jason Day, while the first part of 2015 was all about Jordan Spieth. With McIlroys injury and him not winning as much as he would like, I think theres a little part of him that will want to prove theres a stubborn fella from Northern Ireland who is still quite good as well. When Rory gets the bit between his teeth and is a man on a mission, well see some very impressive stuff from him. PITTSBURGH -- Pat Narduzzi understands the renewal of Pitts rivalry with Penn State after a 15-year hiatus is sure to generate plenty of chatter. All things being equal, Narduzzi would rather keep the Panthers out of it.Narduzzi is putting his team on lockdown ahead of Saturdays long-awaited visit from the Nittany Lions for reasons he described as more practical than personal. The second-year coach isnt worried about his players littering the walls in Happy Valley with bulletin board material. Hed just rather have them focused on the task at hand rather than spend time talking about it.We dont want any distractions, Narduzzi said. Id rather them go right in the film room. If its three minutes (with the media), it might be the three minutes well miss (in film).Narduzzi stressed he wants to be the only voice for the program, and he is fine with treating Pitts first meeting with Penn State since 2000 as more than just another game. In many ways it is, not just for in-state bragging rights for the next year but also for whatever edge it may gain in the living room of recruits that have both schools on their radar. It plays a major factor I think in the end, Narduzzi said. I think kids look up and they want to play for a winner and they want to know which ship is floating and strong. The Panthers put together a solid but hardly overwhelming 28-7 win over Villanova last weekend. While the outcome was never really in doubt once running back James Conner scored twice in the second quarter in his stirring return from a bout with Hodgkins lymmphoma, there is plenty to work on as Pitt takes on an opponent that will be a significant step up in class. Discount Under Armour Shoes. The offense managed just 261 yards and Conner averaged a modest 3.1 yards per carry, the lowest in his career in any game in which hes carried it at least 10 times. Narduzzi chalked it up to a bit of rust and Conners propensity to look for a big play every time instead of settling for whats there. When he hit it, he did pretty good, Narduzzi said. When he started to look for that touchdown (he started to dance). Hes a big, powerful downhill runner. Thats why were not a spread offense.Conner was in kindergarten the last time Pitt and Penn State shared the same field, a 12-0 victory by the Panthers on Sept. 16, 2000, and Conner is one of the oldest players on the Panthers. Narduzzi understands it may be a bit of a challenge for a group with no personal history against the Nittany Lions to suddenly develop strong emotions one way or the other.Thats one of the reasons for the media blackout. Narduzzi spent eight years as part of Michigan States contentious annual showdown with Michigan while working as the Spartans defensive coordinator. Getting used to the white-hot flame -- and the unique circumstances surrounding the game -- took some time. When I first got into a major rivalry, I didnt get it, he said. I didnt get it until the second year. I want to make sure they get it the first year. ' ' '

Teams are good, if you do (make) mistakes, theyre going to punish you for that.Dallas (2-1-0) returns home after splitting a two-game road trip. The Stars dropped their first road game of the season, 6-5 at Colorado on Saturday, before edging Nashville 2-1 at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday.Through three games, the Stars have two players tied for the team lead in goals with two apiece. Perennial NHL All-Star center Tyler Seguin is no surprise but hes accompanied by veteran forward Adam Cracknell, who has gotten an opportunity to play because fellow veteran Ales Hemsky has been sidelined with a groin injury. My play is the result of our guys playing well, Cracknell told the Stars official website after practice on Wednesday. Were all playing as a unit. I think were buying into the system right now. Were getting rewarded, which is nice.Stars coach Lindy Ruff said on Wednesday that Hemsky, who has been skating, will not play Thursday and neither will fellow forward Jiri Hudler (flu). Ruff said Hudlers illness is so severe right now that the Stars want him to stay away from the team facility to avoid infecting any of his teammates until his condittion improves. Johnny Oduya also missed practice on Wednesday, but Ruff said the veteran defensemans absence was due to a maintenance day. After starting the season last week with a 4-2 win against Anaheim, Dallas will be playing its second home game of the season on Thursday. And even though the Stars are coming off their most complete game of the season Tuesday in Music City, Ruff still wants to see more.Weve still got work to do, Ruff said. We got to clean up our special teams. Our power plays got to become quicker. Our 5-on-5 play became a lot quicker, now our power plays got to become quicker. One reason why the Kings have struggled to start the season is because they have been without top goaltender Jonathan Quick, a former Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the MVP of the 2012 playoffs. Quick sustained a lower-body injury in the first period of their season opener last Wednesday.Quick is expected to miss between three and four months, leaving goaltending duties to be divided between Jeff Zatkoff and veteran Peter Budaj. The latter was recently recalled from the minors to serve as Zatkoffs backup.Zatkoff is 0-3-0 with a 4.37 goals-against-average and an .839 save percentage, numbers which are a far cry from those posted by Quick. But Kings coach Darryl Sutter knows his goaltending situation is out of his hands and all he can do is hope for the best.Theres nothing you can do about it. Theres not one thing, Sutter said after the loss in Minnesota. I said it when Jonathan got hurt. Theres not one thing that I can do about it or anybody can do about it, right? You expect the guys that are in there to play as well as they can, and if they play as well as they can, thats good. ' ' '

The NHL and NHL Players Association want players to plan for life after hockey long before they hang up their skates. Now they have an avenue to do so.The league and union on Thursday announced a new program intended to help players further their education, network and find out what jobs they might be suited for, such as finance and broadcasting. The goal of the Core Development Program is to connect with players early so the transition to life after hockey is easier. Its not just for players late in their careers, deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. Its going to be focused on players and really raising awareness among even the younger players that the sooner they can start focusing on the longer term, the better off theyll generally be -- as much in their careers as after their careers. The NFL, NBA and MLB all have resources to help players transition after retirement, and the NHL Alumni has one with the BreakAway program. This new endeavor is closer to the NFL and NFLPAs Player Engagement department that focuses on continued education, financial stability and career development.Retired defenseman Mathieu Schneider, now the NHLPAs special assistant to the executive director, said player feedback as far back as 2013 helped spawn the new program. He said he believes players are generally conscious of the uncertainty of life after hockey and that many wanted more assistance. Its really to help guys figure out first what they think theyre good at, and then second to help them figure out what they really are good at and to give them the tools to be successful at whatever it may be that theyre interested in, said Schneider, who called the diversity of the union membership the biggest challenge. You have a significant number of players that want to [get a college degree], you have a significant number of players that might want to start their own business, that want to be involved with finance, that want to become agents. While theyre playing, they have incredible opportunities that other people might not have. Some players have taken their own initiative in establishing non-hockey interests during their playing days, such as Bostonn Bruins captain Zdeno Chara getting his real estate license. Cheap Jordan 13 Online. Longtime forward Jeff Halpern, now an assistant coach for the American Hockey Leagues Syracuse Crunch, considers an example such as Chara the best way to sell this program to current players.I think its easy when guys are ending their careers or at the end of their career for people to become interested because they realize that their window is closing, said Halpern, part-owner of a fried chicken and doughnut shop in the Washington area. Getting through to young players may be the hardest obstacle for the league and for the PA. I think most guys, they want to hear about other examples, other things that could be made available to them.Washington Capitals defenseman Nate Schmidt is in the process of studying for his real estate exam and working with an adviser at the University of Minnesota. He said he thinks the program could help a lot of players fill their time and ease their minds.A lot of guys, I think, are just scared of what happens after theyre done playing, Schmidt said. Even for a guy that has a college degree, Im kind of nervous for when that day might come.Taking away the What now? nerves is another potential benefit of the program. In other words, a relaxed player is a better player. There have been studies done that show that players that are prepared for life after sports, after their careers, actually perform better during their careers, Schneider said. Maybe it alleviates the anxiety or the some of the pressure that might come normally. The voluntary program is independent of BreakAway, but Daly didnt rule out collaboration later. More ideas cant hurt, and players are glad to know they have help coming up with future paths. You need to be aware of the opportunity thats there, Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner said. Its nice to learn and be more of a well-rounded person because hockey is just one part of your life and it lasts for a year to 20, if youre lucky, and then you got a whole lot more hopefully to live.
